Integrating Blocks and Text in the ClassroomPresentation only

In this talk, we will describe plans for a new curriculum—targeting high-school junior through undergraduate first-year students—that is supported by novel programming interfaces which more smoothly integrate blocks- and text-based editing. Key to this work is the notion of ragged blocks (“rocks”), a user interface feature that allows nested, structured program text to be visually decorated and rendered while retaining the look and feel regular text as much as possible. In contrast, existing block editors typically require significantly more screen space to display programs. With the benefit of ragged blocks, we will develop code style sheets that convey rich information about programs—regarding syntactic structure, type information, run-time values, lint suggestions, and more—within the course materials that students read, as well as in (ragged-)block-enabled text editors that students will use for coursework.
